Turbine Location and Planning

Locating a turbine will require a detailed site survey, and may not on the surface be the obvious place. Most land owners will know their property better than anyone else and that knowledge will be invaluable. There will be many factors to take into account. They are:

The site survey will include:

Using the NOABL database we will assess the wind speed when doing a desk top study. We then  apply local circumstances to provide a estimated wind speed.
Any issues which may impact on the installation of a wind turbine, e.g. site access, ground conditions, electrical connection, cable routes etc will be identified
Advice on the possible locations within the site for a turbine, taking into account the best location for wind, noise, shadow flicker, safety and the least impact on the surrounding properties and views.
Detailed measurements which can subsequently be used when applying for planning.
Details of the required ground works for the installation of the turbine, normally sufficient for you to obtain a quotation for that aspect of the project

Other considerations include:

The turbine must be at least 50m, and ideally 75m to 100m from the nearest property to avoid noise being an issue.
Also access to the site will be needed for a lorry or crane in order to deliver and install the turbine tower.

Location the turbine

The turbine should ideally be sited as far away as possible from buildings and trees, as these can not only block the wind but will cause turbulence. Please view the illustration below that demonstrates  where a wind turbine should ideally be located.

Wind Turbine Location. Iskra.

If a house is 10m high, the wind will be effected up to 200m away. Even a small hedge 1m high will cause it to be effected for 20m.

Planning difficulties

Erecting a turbine may be have planning issues that may make your site unsuitable. They are

Military installations: A turbine will not be allowed in close proximity to a military airbase or radar station and permission from the MOD will be required
Neighbours: Ideally the turbine should be at least 50m away from surrounding homes, however we would recommend further where possible. In the case of larger turbines this distance increases.
Planning may be an issue in areas of outstanding national beauty or a national park. ...
